Protected Health Information (PHI) transferred via texting, by law, needs to be double-encrypted to fulfill the HIPAA-encryption requirements set forth by the Department of Health and Human Services. To meet these requirements, patients are required to download the Telegram Messenger App, which adds a 2nd extra layer of encryption when the encryption option is enabled. The 1st layer of encryption comes from a patient's password protected phone. If not password protected already, we highly recommend all patients password protect their phone to protect PHI.
